Uchi Mata Gaeshi - Inner Thigh Reversal

Gokyo No Waza #60
   Judo Fundamentals
Kumikata - Migi        Shizentai - Migi

Uke starts by attacking your left leg with Uchi Mata. To prevent from being pulled too far off balance when Uke initiates the attack, lower your hips about 6 inches and turn your hips just to the right so that the effect of Uke’s attack is minimized. Your kuzushi, once you have blocked Uke’s throwing attempt, will be to your left (Uke’s Ma Ushiro).

As Uke places the attacking leg against the inside front of your left leg, release your left hand grip and encircle Uke’s waist from behind. At the same time, keep your right leg planted firmly on the mat and raise your left foot from the mat. Your left foot should be turned in so that the bottom of your foot is placed against the back of Uke’s left heel.

Pull hard toward your right hip with your right hand and drive Uke's right sleeve forward over his right shoulder with your left. This steering and turning action will cause Uke's body to turn so that his back is exposed to the mat and it will reduce the effectiveness of his technique. Combined with the sweeping action of your left foot, Uke's feet are removed from under him and his is thrown straight down to his back at your feet.
