KUZUSHI

From migi jigotai, your right arm having passed under Uke’s left armpit and your palm pressing against his left shoulder-blade area along with your left hand grasping his right outer sleeve; pin Uke’s right arm snugly against your left armpit.

Draw Uke out to his left front corner (hidari mae sumi) forcing him to advance his left foot and then to follow up by stepping forward with his right foot. At this moment, as he advances his right foot, step forward with your left foot while using your hands and body movement to break his balance to his right front corner (migi mae sumi).

TSUKURI

With Uke moving toward you with his right foot and leaning forward with his weight on his toes, drop quickly onto your back directly beneath Uke with your hips on a line between Uke's ankles. As you drop, simultaneously place the instep of your right foot in the crook of his left knee (or to his left inner rear thigh) so that you can force him forward with the pulling action of this foot.  With your right leg lift his left leg upwards and towards your head - which is now nearing the mat. Your body should begin to roll towards your left shoulder and arm which still has Uke's right arm pinned.  The closer you keep Uke's right shoulder to your left shoulder, the easier the throw.

Tip: this technique is made stronger if you raise your right leg while you are dropping onto your back - but not after your back touches the mat.  As your left hand pulls, and your right hand pushes, Uke’s body is propelled over your head.

NOTE: If there is too little space between you and Uke, you will succeed on pulling Uke on top of you and not in throwing him.  It is critical that suitable space (about the thickness of your torso) be maintained during Kake.

KAKE

As Uke is lifted from the mat, drive your left leg into the mat to raise your hips while driving Uke's left leg over your left shoulder with the instep of your right foot.  Once your right leg's range of motion is completed, use the leg to turn over onto Uke who is now completing the shoulder roll and is ready to be pinned.
